Postmortem
Successes:
One of the most important successes was that our idea of a multi-control system was well implemented. We have set up the bullet particle system successfully by the second week. Thus, we were able to build our game based on these core mechanics. Moreover, we have created a dialogue system to give players a sense of interactive narrative storytelling and help players become immersed within the game space. Not to mention there is a tutorial at the beginning which introduces essential game mechanics as the player progresses. A variety of functionaries constructs a complete game plot and ensures more playability to the whole game. Other than the mechanics, the game has various enemy models as well as different audio sources. We set different background music for different stages of the game but keep visual elements appear consistent throughout the game. These features increase the overall completeness of the game and create an intense but enjoyable atmosphere.
Challenges:
We’ve encountered multiple challenges throughout the game-making process. One of the biggest challenges is to figure out different methods between single selection and multi-selection of the objects and eventually choose to abandon the single selection feature. Other technical challenges included ensuring the correct vision box , setting up a war of fog and the bullet particle system, and avoiding the army always moving to navigation target produced unnecessary crowd.
What You Learned:
Working on this project, we learned how to divide up work among team members and how to collaborate using Unity. We also learned about game design and realized how much planning goes into a game to make it work successfully. On the technical side, we also learned how to make a dialogue system that walks players through the tutorial phase. Moreover, we also learned to implement the multi-control feature and set up a war of fog.
Possible Future Revisions:
There are many more revisions we would like to make but do not have time to make it happen. We could have let the player use the base to build up troops on his own, instead of providing him with a certain number of units to fight against the enemies. In this way, the game will become more like a real-time strategy game. We also would like to add a mechanic that shows the status of each unit of the troop or unit as a whole to give the player a better view of the overall progress of the battle. We were also thinking of making the commander’s speech sounds more vivid as the text to speech software doesn’t work as expected, but there might be other ways to do so or maybe we can record our voice instead.
